The Volunteer - Abinger Hammer - Surrey

A great little pub, often busy at the weekends and not empty on a wet Wednesday in February.  The pub whippet sleeps soundly under a duvet near the open fire and the locals say hello as you arrive, its not necessary to say the atmosphere is perfect, I should say that the food is also very good.  The menu is short but has enough for most tastes, the staff are friendly and serve you with a smile.

What more can we say other than our Dog was welcomed by all and we truly enjoyed the evening.

Little Dudley House - Dorking

An upmarket gastro pub/brasserie that delivers most of what it promises. The ambience is lovely and the service impeccable. The menu is varied including a fabulous beer battered fish and chips that was huge. Other mains include various steaks with frites, lobster, pork in cream sauce and a chickpea cottage pie. There is a lighter menu too with serves salads and a great looking fish finger sandwich. My only criticism is that it is all a bit safe but I suppose sometimes that's a good thing?

Delfina, Bermonsey Street, London.

I went here with a client and a journalist for an informal interview over lunch. It's a good venue for that as there is plenty of room between tables, the acoustics are good and it's not very busy. But perhaps the fact that it is not very busy is because the food itself is decidedly underwhelming.

According to their website "The Delfina Studio Café opened in 1994 as a canteen for the resident artists but has now evolved to become a leading destination restaurant on the Southbank. Maria Elia's highly praised menu changes fortnightly and the restaurant is now popular amongst the business and artistic community alike both looking for good value cuisine in an inspiring and relaxed setting.' In reality the menu is limited and the food is just ok. For main course  my client and the journalist had pheasant which was rather dry with very safe roasted vegetables to accompany it. My 'fish of the day' was a very small piece of overcooked salmon on what looked like a bed of pre bagged salad. I was slightly embarrassed as both client and journalist are self confessed foodies. Luckily our choice of wine was great and the waiting staff very pretty but unfortunately in that part of London it is just not enough.

Going back to their website: it wasn't popular, it was OK value, absolutely NOT inspiring and I wasn't relaxed because the food simply wasn't good enough.

Wabi - Horsham

Quite simply the best japanese food I have ever eaten. Ignore the reviews that suggest small portions and high prices as it's not true. OK it's not cheap but the ingredients are top notch and there are noodle and rice dishes to fill you up if you need it. We had a Bento box (£13) and a sushi and sashimi platter (£12.50) and everything was absolutely delicious. The restaurant decor is stylish and staff friendly and efficient. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Pho - Brighton

Serves vietnamese street food which seems to be mainly noodles with a variety of different additions. The flavours are fantastic and for about £7 you get a huge bowl with some spring rolls on top. You can add your own chilli and you mix everything up together. It's very healthy too with lots of fresh veg and salad so is pretty guilt-free. You can sit at benches, in booths or normal tables and it's a fun, buzzy atmosphere.

The Three Crowns - Wisborough Green

Overall rather disappointing. This pub has had a great refurb and the menu looks promising but it failed to deliver. Its offering gastro pub type food and it nearly gets it right but not quite. I chose the special of the day a  warm crayfish salad which was basically a pile of (quite tasty) crayfish tails next to a medium sized salad garnish for £11.50. I'm pretty sure the crayfish was frozen. Mr Wilson did slightly better with good fish and chips but the portion was very small - just a few chips and at a price of £12.99 a bit of a rip off. Would I go back - probably not which is a shame but there is better value, better quality pub grub nearby.
